Lessons Learned: Practitioners Perspectives on Trauma-Informed Responses to Human Trafficking in Ohio

Human trafficking survivors each have an individual experience that requires individualized steps for healing and regaining control over their lives. This session is led by two professionals who strive (albeit imperfectly) to come alongside trafficking survivors in this journey through the fields of advocacy, case management, and legal services. The session will be interactive and will focus on the lessons learned in trauma-informed services in some of the most difficult situations, where survivor needs often may conflict with other priorities. The presenters will share examples of different ways of handling these situations, and will provide a discussion of how helping professionals, trafficking survivors, and community members can join with survivors on their healing journeys in a trauma-informed way.
Objectives:
1) To illustrate the difference between trauma-informed care and traditional services for trafficking victims and other victims of violence.
2) To provide practical examples and explain lessons for service providers, students, survivors, and governmental agencies about what practices and procedures may hinder victims in their recovery journey.
To give ideas and tips for improving trauma-informed services across disciplines such as case managers, attorneys, mental health providers, medical providers, and other helping professionals.
